I feel like I've been in hiding for the last month. I started grad school, moved into a new house with my family, and have been busier than usual at work. But I got an e-mail this morning that requires attention, and the word needs to spread quickly so that Catholics can take action. HeadlineBistro.com, a site run by the Knights of Columbus, is reporting that a series of videos has emerged on YouTube in which the Eucharist is desecrated in various ways:
As long as YouTube allows this, as long as there is an audience for it, these videos will continue. Contacting YouTube and expressing our strongest possible objections to this practice is the first step, but make no mistake - this is a problem that isn't going away. There are other sites, and there will be other videos, and we're in this for the long haul. We are fighting a culture that has become demonically obsessed with the destruction of human life and the utter dissolution of the Christian Faith. The "tolerance" that has long been the hallmark of our pluralistic society is rapidly turning again into intolerance - militant atheism, angry liberalism, rabid pro-abortionism, and public contempt for those of religious belief are becoming more commonplace. It may not exactly be a revival of the Roman persecutions, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that over time, it could easily head that way. I urge you to take action and let YouTube know this is a discriminatory, hateful, and unacceptable use of their service. UPDATE: I can't find an e-mail address to complain about the actions of a specific user on YouTube, but you can flag individual videos as offensive and leave a note. The difficult part of this approach is that you actually have to play the video in order to complain about it, and for me, the idea of watching over 30 videos desecrating the Eucharist is not something I am looking forward to. The collection of these videos can be found here , if you're willing to spend some time flagging them. Readers have left 7 comments. Steve, When contacting YouTube, do you need to specify which specific videos you want them to take down? Or will a general complaint suffice? Desecration of the Eucharist has been with us a long time. But the Internet has allowed evil a new venue - and one that is difficult to combat. But sites like YouTube need to be held accountable to what they allow. Written by Zoe There is information about an online petition and email addresses here. http://tinyurl.com/3lr6fy Written by Criffton I flagged about five of them, but I just can't stomach watching much more than that. Hopefully this poor guy has a sincere conversion; and hopefully he's mutilating unconsecrated hosts. Reading the description of the poster, he claims this is all about an experiment to expose how Catholics are as violent as radical Muslims. Of course, what he fails to realize is that whackjobs sending him threats and hate mail are acting independent of religious leadership. It's also ironic that his videos actually remind me of the terrorist videos where punks mutilate dolls representing American soldiers. Written by Peter Freeman It's a wafer of bread. It is not the body of Christ. That is impossible. If you believe that it is the body of Christ, either symbolically or because you subscribe to fanciful 11th century notions on transubstantiation, then you are entitled to think whatever you want to think, but the person in this video is under no such obligation to feel the same way and I would suggest your righteous indignation might be better expelled upon the people who deserve it. You might start with Paul Marcinkus. quit whining. youtube is nondiscriminate in what they allow users to upload and are not responsible for the content. if you dont like it, dont watch it. not everyone is a catholic. just pray for him or whatever it is that you do. Written by andy I'm sorry, but this makes me laugh. Do you really think that the problem is that the videos are being shared? Because even if you get youtube to take the videos down(unlikely, as there is no tos violation or legal problem related to the video), These people will still do this. Does it matter that he broke one in half and ate it after denying the holy ghost? Can't he just take the eucharist in mass, say in his head "I deny all this" and swallow? Woudn't that be almost exactly as bad? Finally, there is the Streisand effect. Look it up on wikipedia. In short: If you try to get the videos removed, they will explode in popularity. They will be posted everywhere. Hell, I'M going to download a copy of these videos now, just so I can re-upload them if they ever get removed. Written by Trav |
