Bishop's Conference Gave ACORN Over $1,000,000 in 2007

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development gave $1.1 million to ACORN in 2007. You can find this fact on the CCHD Website. If you add up all the groups called ACORN or Association Of Community Organization For Reform Now, you get a total of $1,111,000 in 2007.

With all the new scandals about ACORN, this funding may become more problematic for the CCHD than it already is.

Take a look at the clips below from ACORN's 2008 National Convention and ask yourself whether you are comfortable with $1,000,000 of your Catholic money being given to them.

I've never seen such an egregious flouting of 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status in my life. This clip alone provides sufficient grounds for the CCHD to defund ACORN:

Deal, I wish I could share your hope that a good healthy scandal will result from this. As long as I've been watching (which, admittedly, isn't an exceedingly long time), the American public has always regarded election fraud with an indulgent eye. Unless the CCHD was also giving money to groups advocating English-speaking or photo id at polling places, I'm not going to hold my breathing waiting for a tempest.

Deal,

First, thank you for taking the time to research this.

Second, this is a REAL scandal. I am horrified. I am also spreading the word to every good Catholic I know. I learned a little bit about CCHD last year and decided not to give anything again. But after learning this information, I plan to actively work to ensure that others do not give as well.

Third, it's not limited to ACORN. A quick review of the donation list shows there are numerous other organizations that are similarly ideological. They may not be involved in election fraud, but election fraud is simply the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the problems with ACORN.

Fourth, I took a look at the criteria CCHD uses for awarding grants. One of them is as follows:

Organizations with primary focus on direct service (e.g., daycare centers, recreation programs, community centers, scholarships, subsidies, counseling programs, referral services, cultural enrichment programs, direct clinical services, emergency shelters and other services, refugee resettlement programs, etc.).

My interpretation of this is that organizations that actually serve the poor by providing services are INELIGIBLE for funding. So when we hear at Mass that CCHD is there to serve the poor...well, not quite. Even if ACORN were not a recipient of such large amounts of grant money this alone would make me never give to CCHD again.

How horrifying.

ACORN played an influential role in Obama's rise in the Chicago political scene and is being handsomely rewarded for their efforts on behalf of the Obama campaign:

A specific, month by month account of money paid by the Obama campaign to the ACORN front organization, Citizens Services, Inc. for those fraudulent “advance service”, taken from FEC reports and totaling $832,598.29 since Feb, 2008, can be found here.

Barack Obama has a long and colorful history of denying his embarrassing, radical leftwing associations, until he can no longer maintain the façade. At which point, he jettisons whatever or whoever has caused the embarrassment and MovesOn.

As he has done throughout his career, Obama has been rewarding those who support his ambitions. The Obama campaign, flush with cash, has been funneling money to ACORN through Citizens Services, Inc. much as he did in Chicago with the Woods Foundation and the Annenberg-Chicago Challenge. While Obama served on the Board Of Directors of the Woods Fund, for example the Chicago ACORN received grants Of $45,000 (2000), $30,000 (2001), $45,000 (2001), $30,000 (2002), And $40,000 (2002) From The Woods Fund, as reported on the Donors Forum Website, ifs.donorsforum.org.

I am happy to say that over the past two years when ACORN grant applications reached my desk from CCHD, I turn each of them down. This amounted to over $100,000 of Catholics' money that was NOT going to ACORN. It didn't take much insight on my part to recognize what ACORN was up to and I could clearly see right from the start that this was a partisan political outfit. I would not participate in jeopardizing my diocese's tax exempt status by funding what is now very clear to everyone - that ACORN is a politically dishonest group that has broken the law in multiple instances. Catholic money has been used to help elect a pro-abortion presidential candidate. SHAME

Senator McCain seem to disagree. He attended an ACORN rally in 2006.

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati announced today that it is suspending all financial support for ACORN. From Tony Stieritz, Director of the Catholic Social Action office for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati: "CCHD funding has been currently suspended to all local ACORN chapters. We are currently updating the page that you referenced from our site, so you will see the addition of 7 projects that are receiving national CCHD funding shortly. However, none of them will be ACORN." Read more here:
