The list of U. S. bishops who have spoken out on the priority of the life issues in this election is now over 100. The list now contains 70 individual bishops and three joint statements. I would like to continue updating this list until the day of the election. I have tried to incorporate all the comments thus far. If I dd not get them all, I apologize. (For a few of the suggestions, I could not find a suitable link.) Please continue using the comments section to let us know what bishop is not on this list who should be. This would include any bishop who has individually, or jointly, published a statement about this election pointing out the primacy of the life issues. Thank you for your help. 1. Written by Martin E. Dybicz It looks to me as if some of your links are to the bishops' criticism of Nancy Pelosi's comments about Catholic teaching on abortion, but not about voting specifically. But in some cases the same bishop has also spoken about abortion and voting. For example, you have a link to Bishop Kevin Farrell's condemnation of Pelosi's remarks, but he and Bishop Vann also have a statement which is more explicit on abortion and voting, here: http://www.cathdal.org/img/Flash/EngFarrellVann.pdf Written by Paul H As I have been reading Catholic blogs over the past few weeks, I have been bookmarking bishops' statements that directly address the issues of abortion and voting. Here is a link to a blog post where I have listed all of the statements that I have found so far: Catholic Bishops Speak on Abortion and Voting Written by Paul H It looks like HTML comments don't work. Sorry about that. The URL in my previous post should be the following: http://tinyurl.com/65zgfy Written by Paul H Archbishop Michael J. Sheehan has made a statement as well. http://tinyurl.com/5uarv6 Not that it materially matters, but does your "100" count twice those who signed both an individual statement and one of the four joint statements? The correct url for Bishop John Smith's statement (#55) is http://tinyurl.com/5kn8d8. Written by Fr. Jim O'Neill I agree with Paul H. Perhaps there should be two lists, one listing the bishops who have spoken out about Church teachings on abortion, such as those who have corrected Pelosi and Biden and another that lists the bishops who have spoken out about voting pro-life. http://tinyurl.com/57klnh I agree with Paul H. — Fredi D'AlessioThanks. :) Perhaps there should be two lists, one listing the bishops who have spoken out about Church teachings on abortion, such as those who have corrected Pelosi and Biden and another that lists the bishops who have spoken out about voting pro-life. — Fredi D'AlessioA version of the first list you mentioned, of bishops who have corrected Nancy Pelosi, [link=http://preview.tinyurl.com/59k5yp]can be found at American Papist[/link]. I guess it can't be done. Anyway, here is the "tinyurl" URL for the American Papist list that I was referring to: http://tinyurl.com/59k5yp Written by Paul H I've been posting much of them as well - see http://tinyurl.com/5qy87e I also have additional statements posted at http://tinyurl.com/57klnh In a memo dated October 21, 2008, to his clergy of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy (diocese) of Van Nuys, Bishop Gerald Dino wrote to express his concern: "about the fact that many Catholics, even some Catholic priests, nuns and laity … are teaching that it is perfectly acceptable to vote for candidates who are pro-abortion, pro-same-sex marriages, pro-embryonic stem cell research, etc., while they themselves claim to accept Church teachings on these issues. They base their position on a misunderstanding of a document issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops…entitled FORMING CONSCIENCES FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP.” Bishop Gerald encourages the pastors of our Eparchy to share with their parishioners the joint Pastoral Letter issued by the Most Rev. Kevin J. Farrell, Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas (TX) and the Most Rev. Kevin W. Vann, Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Worth (TX). Bishop Gerald recommends the letter: “To help set the record straight. This letter very succinctly lays out the correct teaching contained in the document [i.e., Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship].” |
