Only 6 of the 24 Catholic Senators voted “yea” yesterday to restore the Mexico City Policy. Last week President Obama rescinded the policy of President Bush, and first instituted by Reagan, not to provide federal funds to organizations doing abortions overseas. Six of the eight Catholic Republican senators voted "YEA," to restore the policy: Martinez (FL); Brownback (KS); Bunning (KY); Vitter (LA); and two newly elected senators: Johanns (NE) and Risch (ID). Two Republican Catholic senators who frequently vote anti-life with Democrats on life issues voted against restoring the policy, thus allowing federal funds to be given to groups providing abortions overseas: Murkowski (AK) and Collins (ME). These two Republians joined 16 Catholic Democrats voting "NAY," including the “pro-life” Sen. Bob Casey, Jr. (PA). Not voting was Sen. Kennedy (MA). Does it get any more pathetic than this? My friend Lisa Correnti over at www.onenationundergod.org made this comment:
Please go to Correnti’s web site www.onenationundergod.org and sign the petition to Cardinal George, president of the USCCB, asking him to tell Catholic politicians to stop receiving campaign donations from pro-abortion organizations like NARAL, Planned Parenthood, Emily’s List, and NOW. $9,000,000 has been received by sitting Catholic members of the present Congress! Here is a list of the other Catholic Democrats who voted not to restore the Mexico City Policy: Gillibrand (NY); Reed (RI); Leahy (VT); Cantwell (WA); Menendez (NJ); Murray (WV); Begich (AL); Dodd (CT); Landrieu (LA); Harkin (IA); Kerry (MA); McCaskill (MO); Mikulski (MD); Durbin (IL) and Kaufman (DE). Here is a list of the total contributions made to the senators who voted against the bill to restore the Mexico City Policy. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), who assumed office only in January 2007, has accepted $986,619 from the pro-abortion lobby. Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) has received $205,768 “Pro-life" Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA), $327,914. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), $1,043,301 Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), $17,400 Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA), $303,014 Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), $44,585 Sen. Christopher Dodd (CT), $31,235 Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), $326,996 Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), $191,057 Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), $367,491 Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), $77,216 Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), $24,435 Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), $244,360 Question: How many of the ordinaries of these Catholic politicians will make a public statement rebuking the Catholic senator from their diocese for voting against restoring the Mexico City Policy? Readers have left 12 comments. Dear Mr. Hudson, While writing our politicians might have some marginal effect, we need to be giving a hard time to our local ordinaries. They need to start asserting their authority. Maybe you could post a list of the Bishops who are associated with the realms of these Catholic politicians. And then have a massive letter writing campaign to persuade the Bishops to take more assertive action in protecting the Body of Christ from the Leviathan that is DC. Regards, Casey Khan Written by Casey Khan I have written bishops outside my own diocese to thank them for their leadership; I would like to contact others to ask them for theirs. Also, Risch(ID) is listed on both the yea and nay list. Written by Pamela I am at the point where I'm really beginning to wonder - what do you have to do to get excommunicated these days? The scandal exists because these so-called "Catholic" politicians are voting this way. So let's tell them to hand in their Catholic badges and be done with it. It's only going to get worse, not better, and it's high time we stood our ground. Thanks, Pamela, I corrected my post. Sometimes, rather often actually, I write these posts, and comments, while I am gripped by a reaction to news of some sort, and my mind is working way ahead of my fingers. Words get left out, etc., thus, I always appreciate the corrections. Written by Deal W. Hudson I hope that the USCCB surprises us and takes a stand against the "culture of death" in our government. However, with a few exceptions, I expect that the "sound of silence" will be audible to most "conviction Catholics" and un-noticed by the "identity catholics". LifeSite News published an excellent interview with Archbishop Burke that lays a part of the blame for the election of Obama (and similar thinking congressmen) on the USCCB and "Faithful Citizenship". Go to LifeSiteNews.com. Great interview! Written by TonyC I agree with the party that said it's time to stop writing to politicians like Mikulsky, one of my senators, and time to start writing to the bishops themselves. Also, I've already written an e-mail to Kristen Day of Democrats for Life asking her to distance DFLA from Sen. Casey, who has no claim to the pro-life label at this point. --Eric Pavlat Written by Eric Pavlat Do all of the dollar figures listed represent total political contributions to the senators' campaigns, or do they represent only contributions from the pro-abortion lobby itself? Written by Daniel Latinus Daniel, the dollars figures represent political contributions received from just pro-abortion organizations. Written by Deal Hudson Deal, I hope you'll keep score and anyone else who learns about a bishop taking the bit, please let us (Deal?) know. Eric, Really a nice job in re DFLA & Casey. I still wonder, however, when the repeated betrayals from these guys becomes a gutfull. Cheers. Written by Robert Mosby Please get the facts straight before listing which states these politicians are from. You listed Murray as being from West Virginia when in fact they represent Washington. Neither of the West Virginia Senators are Catholic. Written by Denise L "Question: How many of the ordinaries of these Catholic politicians will make a public statement rebuking the Catholic senator from their diocese for voting against restoring the Mexico City Policy?" Public rebukes have to come after private rebukes. Why go public on this, and how effective/imperative would public action be? Quote(12) Kevin, here's why we and the bishops must go public with rebuke January 31st, 2009 | 10:30am It's really very simple. The offense is public, not private. Those who sin publicly, especially when their sin affects public goods and morals, must be rebuked publicly. Witness John the Baptist's public rebuke of Herod's adultery. Witness Paul's public rebuke to Peter when he showed undue deference to Jewish Christians. I must say, though, that Ms. Correnti's advice to these pols to place themselves under their ordinaries' spiritual direction might be somewhat naive. I suspect that many of these pols vote as they do precisely because of "guidance". Written by Janet Baker |
