| Did President Obama Mislead the Holy Father? |

In the late afternoon of July 1o, President Obama met privately with Pope Benedict XVI for just over 30 minutes. According to official Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi, S.J., "The president explicitly expressed his commitment to reducing the numbers of abortions and to listen to the church's concern on moral issues."
On July 13 in a Senate committee hearing, Sen. Barbara Mikulski was forced to admit under persistent questioning by Sen. Orrin Hatch that the new health-care bill includes abortion coverage. Planned Parenthood's Guttmacher Institute estimates government funding of abortion increases abortion by 20 to 35 percent.
There were 1,206,200 abortions in 2006, according to National Right Life (the last annual results available). The math is easy: If the heath-care package currently being pushed by Obama is passed, the result will be 240,000 to 420,000 more abortions in the first year alone.
Did President Obama know these abortion provisions were in the Senate health-care bill when he met with the Holy Father? There is no reason to think he didn't. He certainly knew he had gone on the record supporting federal funding for abortion in the District of Columbia.
If President Obama is honest with himself, he must admit to misleading Benedict at their meeting.
Obama apologists will immediately defend the president by arguing that his plan is about reducing the need for abortion. Melody Barnes, director of the Domestic Policy Council, revealed this as the Obama administration's real aim last May under questioning from Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America.
It's a weak defense. Those 240,000 to 420,000 additional abortions are a near certainty. Meanwhile, the number of abortions eliminated by direct assistance to poor mothers, sex education, increased contraception, and adoption programs are unknown, and projections are highly speculative.
In fact, the new health-care bill's impact on the unborn will be so great that some are calling it the "silent FOCA." Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Rep. Chris Smith said, "Obamacare is the greatest threat ever to the lives and wellness of unborn children and their mothers since Roe v. Wade was rendered in 1973."
Some Catholic supporters of Obama are urging Senate Democrats to take the abortion provisions out of the health-care package. On America magazine's group blog, Michael Sean Winters wrote, "We should, however, be letting our congressional representatives and senators know that providing federal funds for abortion is a deal-breaker."
Even more surprising is a snippet that Jill Stanek posted from Hardball. Chris Matthews, a Catholic Obama enthusiast, insisted that including abortion services in the health bill is "the last thing Obama needs. The issue's complicated and divisive and controversial enough without bringing abortion into it."
But then Matthews adds the kicker:
He goes over to see the pope and says they're going to reduce the number of abortions, and then that same week he pushes to subsidize abortion? You can't do that!
"You can't do that!" will be exactly the reaction of most of America's Catholics when they realize their president looked Benedict in the eye and said he was committed to reducing abortion, knowing all the while just what was in his health-care bill.
This is not just about the abortion issue anymore. It's about basic respect and honesty.

Written by Tom "Obama apologists will immediately defend the president by arguing that his plan is about reducing the need for abortion." How many times do we have to listen to this before we see the real facts of the statement. He means more distribution of condoms, the morning after pills, and free vasectomies along with including Viagra as a medically approved drug under his health care plan. How benevolent! Now do you get the picture??? This is known in the liberal agenda as giving the masses what they want. Some of us learned the language BEFORE the election. Written by Bill Sr. I think Pope Benedict is capable of dealing with Obama. Obama is a politician, with all that it entails, and to say that he is "slippery" is an understatement. Pope Benedict is not only wise, but rather shrewd, and I think he can more than hold his own with Obama. Written by Austin The Holy Father isn't a stupid, out of touch old man, as much as many in the secularist world would portray him as such. He knows exactly what is going on. Written by D.B. Written by unRuptured The process President Obama follows is laid out Saul Alinsky's book. It is not about truth, it is always about progressing along the way to a better world here on earth. How this is accomplished is not the point. Written by Doug Moore the Holy Father is so credulous that he took the President at face value. Have you forgotten that he gave him copies of Dignitatis Humanae and Caritas in Veritate? — Tom-- what we didnt see is the documents finding their way to the circular file. Written by Joe Of course he did. Beneditct, however, has been "around the block" a few time. So I doubt that he was much taken in by an oily tounged liar. Written by Thomas St Martin There have been many precedents of lies set by previous Presidents, lies to other countries, individuals, and to the American people whom they lead and represent. The previous President, for example, and the reasons for the war in Iraq. No, we don't have to look far for previous examples of this. Sadly, it seems to be becoming part of the nature of politics now. Truth is often in short supply. I'm sure the Holy Father knows this and isn't taken in by weasel words... Written by idj "And faith unfaithful kept him falsely true." Written by Perfidia If I were Obama, I would spin it like this: (looking deeply into my teleprompter) "Although federal funding will appear to increase the number of abortions, it is clear to us that most if not all of these women would have terminated their pregnancies in unsafe and unreported ways. (switching teleprompters) Thus, it is safe to assume that the true number of abortions is not increasing -- while we are still reducing the occurrences of dangerous abortion practices, saving the lives of many impoverished women." Written by Peter Freeman Does anyone else see some similarities with the President of the European Parliament in Father Elijah by Michael O'Brien? And, no, I am not suggesting a connection with the scene towards the end of the book, just the overall persona and affect of the guy. The Immoral (& Amoral) Take Increased Office and Position: God is Love. We are created through Love to love. Our vocation is to love. How easily we become distracted. Jesus is God. Since God is Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, it can be said the End of all means must always be Jesus. Recent elections have swept into public office many who support the ‘means’ of legislation and policies which result not in the ‘End’ of ‘Love’, but in ends otherwise. Unfortunately, this now includes that the ‘means’ executed in the cases of some unborn result in seeking the end of death, that is, the end of life for them. Some unborn are to be eliminated through illicit procured abortion. Tragically, some of our newest public servants have made many other appointments of like-minded confreres to positions and seats of power. How can we love and choose to kill, eliminating the unborn child, as a means to redress the unintended or undesired consequences of our own actions or a perceived problem in society? How can any country, any person, any figure of authority claim to be powerful when within they are blinded in conscience as to where true power rests? That power is given from God, through God – that being the power of Love; for He created us in Love to love. (www.tfsih.com/eNewsletter/ ViewNewsLetter.Aspx?documentID=221 ) What better defines us: "Who we say we are?" Or, "What we do?" Let's not forget the dishonesty of George W. Bush and his supporters who looked the world in the eye and lied about: torture ("We don't torture"), weapons of mass destruction, civilian casualities in Iraq etc. etc. What people say matters less than what they do. I created my own bumper sticker that reads: "United States of America - Land of Political Morons." The body politic is in sad shape. Written by Deacon Ed The purpose of torture is to get enemy combatants to talk, and keep them alive, 100 percent of the time. The purpose of abortion is to kill an unborn civillian 100 percent of the time. Written by Anonymous Are they not pathological liars too? Why would the Pope take any politician at his word unless the brilliant Benedict has over the course of the last year or so slipped into his dotage? Written by Michael I think that the person who said that the Pope can see the nature of our president is probably correct. He is working as our Pontiff with other state leaders - he does not choose the leaders of each state. In a democracy, the voters choose their heads of state. In the United States we elected a man (and lauded him as a great man, btw) a person who participated in a church that condoned violence against children through abortion as well as race hatred. When all of this came to the attention of the voters, Obama decided to disavow his very religion to remain in the favor of the electorate. Not only did he display poor judgement in his belief system, he disavowed his very belief system (religion)for the opportunity to lead the country. Despite how indicative these revelations were regarding his character, we still voted for him in large numbers. The Pope has no culpability in regards to naivete, we as voters have all the culpability in this case. Our Pontiff is only making the best of a bad situation we created. Written by Christine It'd be nice if Obama was completely honest. That's just wishful thinking, though. ![]() Written by Captain I do believe Obama will read the two books; I also believe that the Holy Father gave them with the idea that O. had not really been exposed to any clear Catholic presentation of the issues, thus pastorally giving him a CHANCE at being influenced by reason for the truth. But O. does not go by the truth; he is the ultimate politician and even should he see the force of the Church's mind most likely will not alter his political sense of maintaining power and introducing a radical change in government and thus in all America. Written by pete I'd like to think that the Holy Father made the President squirm with some uncomfortable truths. Written by Lis "BY THY HOLY AND IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, O MARY, DELIVER US FROM EVIL."--Prophetic Prayer taught by Our Lady the Immaculate Virgin as Our Lady of America to Sister Mary Ephrem, Convent of the Sisters of the Precious Blood, Rome City, Indiana, 1956. PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!!!!!! Written by Paul Regretable article. Nobody wants to increase abortion. The strategy by Obama for decreasing it might not make sense... You can argue and explain why you think Obama is fooling himself but don't go pretend Obama can fool the Pope. This is the kind of polarization that doesn't help anybody. Written by Chris Anyone who looked honestly at President Obama's record, his educators, his minister, and his comrades before the 2008 Election is not surprised at the direction in which his Administration is taking America; besides, governments do not prevent murder, they only decide who may legally be killed. Written by Mike Glaser Reading these comments, I am reminded the shadow of the cross accomodates harsh words from many angles. Written by Simple Traveler I agree with most of what you say, although I have to take issue with the statement that more money guarantees 240,000 to 420,000 more abortions. Abortions are not something the government is buying with this money at a fixed price. I think we can all agree that more money for abortions equals more abortions, but will a 20% increase cause a 10% increase or a 50% increase in abortions, only time will tell. On the one hand a woman isn't going to say "hey, abortions just got 20% cheaper, let's get pregnant and have another one!" On the other hand, more money to abortion to PP might enable them to put on a big ad campaign that nets them 50% more abortions. You have a great argument, don't dilute it with numbers not supported by facts. ...and as for misleading the Holy Father, that was no doubt Obama's intent, but I don't for a minute think Pope Benedict would take his words as truth. As another commenter pointed out, the fact that he gave Obama a copy of "Dignitatis Humanae" is evidence of his opinion. Written by Mike Obama being seen with the Pope, Vicar of Christ on earth plays well with those easily confused and misled. The president did what new presidents are expected to do: make a call on the Pope. Obama was elected to a huge degree because of millions of dollars from the pro-abortion industry. He has a debt to pay back to his supporters, which makes it virtually impossible for him to recognize and endorse the protection of innocent, defenseless life as vitally important. Look for more legislative proposals that further, rather than impede, the Culture of Death in the US. The Pope is light years ahead of the president in intellectual brilliance who knew well who he was dealing with. Pray for the conversion of our president and members of our federal government. Written by Jim Connolly Pope B is no fool for the likes of Obama. Specific response to Chris re: "Nobody wants to increase abortion. The strategy by Obama for decreasing it might not make sense..." I think that this is not the issue with Obama. The real issue is that Obama doesn't care one way or another about abortion, what he cares about is the political backing and campaign money he gets for making sure nobody implements a strategy for decreasing abortions. Here's a real program for Obama to decrease abortions: (1) Pool all tax money going to both abortion providers and pro-life alternatives like Crisis Pregnancy Centers, Adoption Agencies, etc and add up the sum. (2) Divide the sum in 3 parts - give two-thirds to pro-life organizations, and one-third to abortion providers...because, if Mr. Obama wants to decrease abortions, changing his budget priorities to favor pro-life charities will clearly achieve his stated aims. (3) After 1-2 years, eliminate all tax money going to abortion providers, and simply let pro-abortion tax payers like Mr. Gore and Mr. Biden support abortion with their 'charitable' contributions. If Mr. Obama recalls the 'charitable' contributions disclosed by Mr. G and Mr. B in their tax returns, he can be confident that abortions will drop off steeply once they are backed exclusively by pro-abortion supporters. Written by Chris from Maryland The Pope was not fooled by Obama. Obama fooled many in this country but as many were not fooled by him. BDK, thank you for calling out the lies. Just a few months ago, I read here that Obama signed (the phantom) FOCA. Written by Analyst The leader of the Culture of Life met the leader of the Culture of death. Sort of like the Creator (God) meeting the destroyer (the devil). The sooner people look at this situation in a supernatural light the better off, and more prepared they will be. Obama is perfectly possessed. See this month's New Oxford Review. Written by Barb W Amen Anne! This is most certainly a spiritual battle. Obama is representing the Father of Lies for whom he is a pawn (either willingly or unknowingly.) Prayer and fasting is the Christian's weapon--on Holy Rosary Beads in unity with Our Lady's Immaculate Heart. St. Joseph, terror of demons, pray for us. DOUG MOORE: The process President Obama follows is laid out in Saul Alinsky's book. Yes, both Clinton and Obama were students of the book. Clinton wrote a college thesis on the book. Obama lived the book, applying its principles to organizing communities in Illinois. He taught it. At a time when the left’s new slogan is “Jesus Christ was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor,” it is helpful to remember that Alinsky dedicated Rules for Radicals to Lucifer -- that is, Satan. Alinsky considered Satan the first radical. The opening chapters of Genesis make clear Satan was the first community organizer. He convinced Adam and Eve that the man put them down. To empower them, Satan encouraged them to eat the apple. The results speak for themselves. Certainly Obama or Hillary Clinton can not easily feign ignorance concerning their beloved mentor. BDK: It has been reported that the new Surgeon General who recieved the Papal award in 2006 believes that all doctors should be taught abortion procedures & how to perform them. Her Papal award should be taken away...she will still have the American Medical Assoc. award. It is disgusting that the AMA sees abortion (murder/infanticide) as a "health" benefit. That many "Catholics" hold inumerable high political & health-related Gov. positions & support the violence of abortion which not only murders a child, hurts the mother emotionally, psychologically and physically (link to breast cancer) and devastates & erodes the family ultimately leading to the breakdown of society--is tragic; indeed shameful. Their every action demonstrates that they do not understand what a true public servant is for they do not genuinely respect the human person nor his/her inherent God-given dignity nor do they protect family life & striving for the common good. If they believe their actions to stem from compassion, then may God rescue us & them from such deception. Written by LEM "Nobody wants to increase abortion." I'm seeing this statement more and more. Citation, please? If you would delve at all into the writings of population control advocates, e.g. the president's choice for 'science czar,' you would see that there are plenty of people who advocate an increase in abortions. Abortionists would probably be pleased with an increase in abortions. Yesterday was my town's annual sidewalk sale, and I was vending at the sale. There were, as you might suspect, lots of little children running around among the crowds of shoppers. Two surly-looking, tattooed & pierced teenage girls were trying to (unwisely) hurry through the crowd but were slowed down by the children running and playing. One of them snorted, rolled her eyes and said (I'm not making this up),"I love abortion." Yes, it was probably just an attempt at a clever remark made in extremely bad taste, but you have to admit it reflects a mindset. Written by KJW I doubt the Holy Father is concerned with this. He most likely takes what US Presidents say with a grain of salt. He and JPII were decieved on Iraq, and have always been decieved on abortion by the US, and so many more issues. Visits to the Holy See are nothing more than photo ops for campaigns for Presidents. Written by Otis *SIGH* Do people really think the Holy Father was misled by Obama? I'm sure he is well-aware of Obama's political double-speak, but is simply doing his duty in spreading the Gospel of Life. In my mind, it's the Catholic Obama Supporters who have been, are, and will continue to be misled by Obama. Either that or they're just in denial about what they've done. I think they underestimated just how anti-life he is. People were so ready for "change" that they were willing to sell their souls. I hope they're happy with the "changes" that have been taking place. They're the ones who continue to express frustration and dismay every time one of his anti-life standings come further to light. PEOPLE, where WERE you the whole time leading up to the election????? Some of us GOT IT about Obama, the whole time. That's why we DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIM!!! But as for the Pope, I think he knows exactly what is up. Give him a little credit. Written by JET He said he would work to reduce abortions, that's all And that is a lot of wiggle room. He is funding abortion and giving a trickle I imagine, to Alexia Kelly or whatever her name is, to reduce abortion. With abortion getting a green light by this administration, yes, pro-lifers will have lots of work to do. Written by mark The man aggresively supports infanticide in the cruelest possible manner -witholding of nutrition and hydration and we are worrying about respect for the pope and dishonesty? Why should people who call the right to slaughter innocent life a constitutional right, and unborn babies, mere fetal tissue, ever be considered honest in the first place? Written by Don L Pope Benedict lived in Germany during the reign of Adolf Hitler. He knows evil when he sees it and I am sure he recognized it when he met Obama. Written by Denise Robinson Didn't 52% of Catholic voters vote for Obama? Even with his most liberal voting record on abortion? All the crying about Obama from Catholics now just amaze me. Written by Donna Lenning A number of posters are absolutely confident that Pope Benedict XVI was not "taken in"; they express their confidence with such phrases as "he's been around the block a time or two." Well, I have known plenty of people both young and old, even ones whose life experiences should have inured them, who were gulled even by characters far less charismatic than Obama. My question is this: Is there any measurable basis for confidence that the Pope was not fooled? To break it out a bit: 1. Are there any previous examples of the Pope being lied to by charming and convincing politicians, on this or similar issues, in which he was able to discern that it was a ruse -- not just too late when it no longer mattered, but early enough to derail to that politician's plans, thereby illustrating that he hadn't been fooled? 2. Has any action by the Pope since the Obama meeting indicated an awareness of not being fooled? I apologize for the skepticism, but I don't want to mistake my hope that the Pope wasn't fooled, for actual reason to believe he wasn't fooled. Written by R.C. "Some Catholic supporters of Obama are urging Senate Democrats to take the abortion provisions out of the health-care package." I'm sorry, I don't understand the shock and dismay. Everyone who voted for Obama knew he was pro-abortion when they voted for him. What were they expecting? Written by Tony G Obama knows no shame. He flat out lied to the Pope. He doesn't care what the Holy Father says or teaches. He delights in pitting Catholics against"catholics". Written by Marge The facts were clear before the election (1) Obama is pro-abortion and (2) his lofty rhetoric rarely matches his action. Yet Obama received 54% of the Catholic vote, encouraged by the likes of shameless Douglas Kmiec. There is a deep fundamental problem, and it is not Obama. Obama is acting consistent with what any reasonably objective person would have expected. Written by Catholic Father Catholic Obama supporters should have known better than to vote for him. The hope and change hasn't helped anyone, particularly the unborn. Are there really people out there that honestly think that Obama cares what the Pope says or how he feels? If you do, then you are naive! Written by MJ once there is enough abortions the population is low enough there wont be enough people to have as many abortions. Written by artfldgr The writer wrote: "You can't do that!" will be exactly the reaction of most of America's Catholics..." Let me assure you that Catholics will do no such thing. Ask yourself, when was the last time you heard a full sermon about abortion? Truly, when did you? I live in Santa Fe, NM, a pretty liberal place. If about 65% of Catholics nationwide support abortion rights OR at least go along with it, according to polls, imagine the proportion of abortion supporters in my town. Yet, you hear almost nothing about such a serious sin from the pulpit. My wife and I attend the cathedral basilica. The rector there, a monsignor, has never uttered the word "abortion," in the ten years I've been around him. Of course, I can't say I've been to every mass of his, but I can say I've never heard him say the word. The fact is, about 53% of Catholics voted for Obama. Hey, no one can say they "didn't know" Obama loves abortion. So they voted for an abortion lover because they thought he was going to give them money, a job or whatever. They will NOT turn on Obama because Obama lied to the pope. I think most Catholics I know would say it's the pope's fault if he's stupid enough to believe Obama would reduce abortions. This is so sad, isn't it? Maybe some day we'll have more than a handful of priest and bishops with the courage to speak out. Written by Bill Carson Re: Question: "Ask yourself, when was the last time you heard a full sermon about abortion?" Answer: Good question. Never. I attend several Catholic Churches weekly and abortion NEVER is a topic of the sermon. Priests are too concerned about offending. What a shame! It should be a topic of the sermon at least once a month. And, if every week the frivolous "announcements" were eliminated in place of a discussion on the atrocity of abortion, the Church and our country would be much better off. Poor Mr. Wise must be reminded Hussein had already used WMD in the Iraq/Iran War. As for the civilian casualties in Iraq, getting exact numbers was beyond unlikely, it was impossible using the statistical measures employed by, among others, the International Red Cross (witness the large disparity in numbers among different organizations). As none of these bean counters understood the familial/tribal society, reasonable estimates put actual civilian casualties at a tenth of what the IRC reported. And, lest we forget THE TRUTH: Mr. "Wise," it was not coalition forces (particularly American soldiers/marines/sailors/airmen) killing civilians...it was Al Qaida in Mesopotamia, led by Abu Musab Zarqawi, doing the killing.
