Archbishop O'Brien on Sonia Sotomayor
Posted on June 17, 2009, 7:34 AM | Deal W. Hudson

When I first saw the quote from Archbishop Edwin O'Brien of Baltimore on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, I was alarmed.  The line that is being quoted around the Internet is that the Archbishop is "pleased and grateful," she is "one of us. "

But if you look at the entire column from the Catholic Review, you will see that the Archbishop is neither endorsing Sotomayor nor claiming she is a Catholic in good standing.  His main intention is to address the fact that Sotomayor no longer attends Mass regularly but was raised in Catholic schools -- particularly the well-known Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx.

Archbishop O'Brien, being from the Bronx, obviously has a special affection for that institution. O'Brien makes the point that you shouldn't judge Cardinal Spellman H.S. to have failed because Sotomayor no longer attends Mass:

I knew Spellman High to be solidly Catholic in spirit and in consistent fidelity to the Church and its teachings. Is that to imply that because the Judge is not a regular "Mass attendee," as are the other four mentioned, her high school somehow failed in its mission? I would not say that at all.

I can't imagine anyone disagrees with this, otherwise every Catholic school I know would be judged a failure!

Regarding Sotomayor, Archbishop O'Brien writes diplomatically and charitably:

Along with Cardinal Spellman High, I am pleased and grateful that Judge Sotomayor is "one of us." And we all hope and pray that if appointed, her decisions will reflect a true "concern for justice and respect for God’s creation."

This is just another example of how selective quotation can completely mislead the reader who fails to check out the source.
