Kmiec Coins a Name for Catholics in the GOP
Posted on September 26, 2008, 8:28 AM | Deal W. Hudson

Several people have asked me why I haven't yet commented on the new book by Prof. Doug Kmiec, arguing why Catholics can support Obama.

I read the book quickly in preparation for debate with Kmiec a week ago on the Al Kresta radio show. While doing so, I was shocked when Kmiec began using the following phrase to describe me and other Catholics who support the GOP: Republican Faith Partisans.

Why was I shocked?  I didn't expect a man as learned and articulate as Kmiec to resort to such denigrating labels, and told him so on the radio show.

The book is interesting from an historical point of view -- it contains a comprehensive argument as to how a self-described pro-life Catholic can vote for Obama. It doesn't contain anything new, but it does make the best argument that can be made for a proposterous position.

For a thorough review and refutation, I suggest taking a look at the article published today by Deacon Keith Fournier. After encountering Kmiec's condescension toward Catholic men and women of good will in the GOP, I had no interest in giving his book serious thought.
