More Abortion Reduction from President Obama
Posted on June 04, 2009, 2:15 PM | Deal W. Hudson

President Obama's budget of May 7, 2009 includes another of his patented "abortion reduction" efforts.  This time Obama asks for the repeal of the Dornan Amendment forbidding the use of taxpayer funds for abortion in the District of Columbia (exceptions are made to save the life of the mother, rape, or incest).

As Justin Aquila from the Susan B. Anthony List explains in a recent email blast to bloggers:

A repeal of the Dornan Amendment is problematic for many reasons, not the least of which is that it does not serve to reduce abortions. According to 2005 statistics released by the Guttmacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, 37% of all pregnancies in D.C. ended in abortion, which is the highest rate of any state in the country. We can only expect this number to rise if public funds are used to pay for abortions.

Aquila goes on to quote from a Guttmacher Institute report showing that where public funding funding is not available there is a 30% reduction in abortion among women on Medicaid.

The bottom line?  Obama's policy will result in many more abortions in the District of Columbia. A substantial number of all pregnancies on the District already end in abortion.

If you would like to sign petition protesting the public funding of abortion on D. C., this link will take you to the Susan B. Anthony List web site.

How is it that so many Catholics continue to parrot the Obama abortion reduction line, when there is absolutely no truth to it?

I wonder if Catholics United, Catholic Democrats, or Doug Kmiec will issue statements protesting the repeal of the Dornan Amendment which will directly result in an increase, not a reduction, of abortions?   Don't hold your breath.
