Obama Says National Right to Life Is Lying
Posted on August 17, 2008, 5:50 AM | Deal W. Hudson

After the Saddleback debate, Obama was interviewed by Dick Brody from CBN. Brody asked Obama about NRTL reports that Obama had voted against a version of the Born Alive Infant Protection Act that was virtually identical to the federal bill passed in 2002.

Obama says the folks at National Right to Life are "lying"!

He really did, I am not kidding.  (Here is the rock solid evidence NRTL published last week about Obama's vote.)

I have wondered what Obama was going to do when the evidence was presented that he... misrepresented his votes on the BAIPA. Now we know. Obama digs in his heels, repeats the same old excuses, and calls the other people liars.

We shouldn't be surprised. Obama's Catholic outreach director, Mark Linton, did the same thing to me on the infanticide issue in an e-mail blasted to his national list.

Here is a transcript of Obama's answer to David Brody:

Obama: Well and because they have not been telling the truth. And I hate to say that people are lying, but here's a situation where folks are lying. I have said repeatedly that I would have been completely in, fully in support of the federal bill that everybody supported - which was to say --that you should provide assistance to any infant that was born - even if it was as a consequence of an induced abortion. That was not the bill that was presented at the state level. What that bill also was doing was trying to undermine Roe vs. Wade. By the way, we also had a bill, a law already in place in Illinois that insured life saving treatment was given to infants.

So for people to suggest that I and the Illinois medical society, so Illinois doctors were somehow in favor of withholding life saving support from an infant born alive is ridiculous. It defies commonsense and it defies imagination and for people to keep on pushing this is offensive and it's an example of the kind of politics that we have to get beyond. It's one thing for people to disagree with me about the issue of choice, it's another thing for people to out and out misrepresent my positions repeatedly, even after they know that they're wrong. And that's what's been happening. (emphasis added)

Obama just made sure his support for infanticide is going to remain an issue for the remainder of the campaign. You don't call the nation's largest and most influential pro-life organization liars and expect the issue to go away.

Doug Johnson, the NRTL representative who published the evidence, is the most respected pro-life lobbyist in the country.  Obama has made a serious mistake by underestimating his opponent.

Obama's attack on NRTL will translate into mainstream media attention on his BAIPA record, which is precisely what he doesn't want. Only the mainstream media can force the issue -- force him to face the evidence that contradicts his explanations of his record.

Obama will be dismissive of the hard evidence only as long as the media allows him to be. Accuse someone else of lying and you invite a level of scrutiny that can backfire.

In the case of Obama and infanticide, it will.
