Obama Campaign Challenges Catholic Vote Article
Posted on March 03, 2008, 9:15 AM | Deal W. Hudson

A column on Politico.com today reveals the Obama campaign attempted, not so nicely, to challenge an article on Obama and the Catholic vote. The disputed article, "Obama Slow to Gain Among Catholics," was published on Saturday, and within minutes the editor, Charlie Mahtesian, started receiving phone calls from various people working for, or supporting, Obama. The most "fiesty" was deputy communications director Dan Pfeiffer.

Mahtesian, who has written about national politics for nearly two decades, said Sunday he was taken aback by Pfeiffer’s bellicose tone.

"Who are you? I've never heard of you. What's your background?" Pfeiffer demanded to know, Mahtesian recalled.

Today's column on Politico offers good insight into the dynamics between a political campaign and the press. It also shows the determination of the Obama effort to attract Catholic voters.

My own take on Obama's problem with Catholic voters, published before the Politico piece, did not elicit any calls from the campaign. Oh well, maybe closer to election time.
