Obama's Catholics Respond to Bill Donohue
Posted on May 08, 2008, 10:06 PM | Deal W. Hudson

The Obama Catholic advisors have responded to Bill Donohue's statement concerning their dissent on non-negotiable Church teachings such as abortion. Their response is surprisingly aggressive for a group of Catholics who support a candidate who defends infanticide; for those who do not know what that means, infanticide is killing a child once he or she has been born.

Yes, Sen. Obama has supported infanticide when he voted against (or "present") bills protecting these children as an Illinois state senator. He defends those votes to this day.

Note the following paragraph written from Obama's Catholics to Donohue:

As Catholics, we view abortion as a profound moral issue. But what have nearly three decades of Republican promises to end abortion accomplished? Other aspects of the conservative Republican agenda have been carried out with fervor, such as weakening of the social-safety net, privatization, deregulation, destruction of labor unions, and belligerent and aggressive foreign policy. But ending abortion remains the perennial promise, one that is too often hijacked by partisan operatives who seek only to divide voters. Many Catholics are fed up with the divisive antics and empty promises around this issue.

Those of us who have been politically active in the GOP on behalf of a culture of life are accused of seeking "only to divide voters." That is not only a silly statement, it's arrogant and offensive. Are these Obama Catholics NOT seeking to draw Catholic voters into the Obama camp? Is this a tactic to "divide voters"? IT SURE IS! That's what a political campaign is --getting the voters to vote for your candidate rather than the other guy.

But why would they accuse Catholics like me of dividing voters? I will tell you why -- for the simple reason that they assume all Catholic voters should think just like they do, that it's acceptable for a Catholic to support a candidate who supports infanticide as long as the candidate is a Democrat and a liberal.

It's for this reason that the Obama Catholics label others as partisans, as if that were some kind of crime, while having publicly proclaimed themselves partisans for Obama. Partisanship is no crime, just as attempting to win voters to your side is not either.

The Obama Catholics are scowling at pro-life Catholics for the very activity they have embraced -- publicly supporting a political candidate.

How strange for a group that contains over two dozen elected officials, various professors, and activists -- you would think they would view political involvement as a laudable activity. Nope, only their political activity -- they alone have noble goals.

I mean, really, how can members of Congress use the term "partisan" as if it were a curse word? And how can they label the attempt to attract voters as if it were encouraging a divorce?

(I will gloss over the obvious answer posed in the first sentence about the achievements of the GOP in opposing abortion, which are too long a list for this post.)

When I first reported on the creation of a committee of Obama Catholics, I noted the number of 100% pro-aborts on the list but also commented that the list contained a number of people with serious credentials who could help Obama in the fall. Thus, I'm surprised to see them lose it so thoroughly over Bill Donohue stating the obvious.

The Obama Catholics should have expected it, ignored it, and forged ahead with their spin machine hoping Catholics ignore the pro-infanticide position of their candidate.

The Obama Catholics have not gotten off to a very good start.
